French cosmetic giant Lancôme, has entered the Kenyan market through a franchise deal with local firm Lintons Beauty World that will be the sole distributor of its cosmetic products in East Africa.
The Lancôme Kenyan franchise was launched at the Garden City Mall on Wednesday.
Lintons, which was started as a pharmacy shop, entered the cosmetics business in 1998.
It sold the pharmacy business three years ago to concentrate on beauty products.
Lintons managing director Joyce Gikunda termed the entry of one of the world’s leading cosmetics brands as a big step for the firm, which opened its fourth store at the Garden City mall this year.
“It’s such an honour to stock some of the biggest brands in the cosmetics industry, Lancôme being one of the most cherished brands by customers,” she said.
Kenyan Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong’o is the 2015 brand ambassador for Lancôme.
The global brand celebrates its 80th anniversary this year.
Baptiste Vesin, marketing manager of Africasie, the main distributors of Lancôme products to Africa, said the cosmetic industry in Kenya has grown steadily as witnessed by the increasing entry of international brand franchises.
“Africasie distributes a range of cosmetic brands to Africa, we are seeing most of these companies being more confident to franchise with companies in Africa,” he said at the launch.
Lintons counts in its products portfolio a range of perfumes, makeup and skin care products such as Yves Saint Laurent, Clarins, Mac and Estee Lauder.

UK's ban on Mirraa cost Kenya Airways 500m
In its latest financial report, Kenya Airways established that the ban by the United Kingdom government on khat (mirraa) cost the airline a whooping 500 million.
The airline which was already suffering major losses was thrown into deeper losses since it was transporting some 2000 tonnes of khat to Britain before the ban.
"A major shift in the product freight structure was encountered in the financial year with the khat ban imposed In the UK, this had a revenue reduction impact of sh. 500 million."Says KQ chief executive Mbuvi Ngunze.
As at March 2015, KQ had recorded a net loss of Sh26 billion.
The airline said that the mirraa shipment accounted for 10 per ecent of its total cargo revenue which is equivalent to Sh860 million.
It cited tourism slump and ebola epidemic in West Africa as reasons for the big net loss.
In a move to bring back the airline to its feet, the government bailed out KQ with 60 billion while at the same time demanding major changes in its management structure.
City tycoon Chris Kirubi is also among businessmen who have bought KQ shares to bring stability to the airline. He bought 2.1 million shares worth 11.5 million.
Kirubi said it was a sign of patriotism to prevent KQ from crashing.
