One Nation for Janet Kanini Concert
In April 2015, N-Soko property show host Janet Kanini Ikua was diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) that resulted in blood clots in her legs. The DVT led to further complications and Janet had to be urgently hospitalized a second time with blood clots in her heart and pulmonary artery. Even after this the DVT kept recurring and Janet decided to seek further intervention in India.
In September, Janet, accompanied by her husband George, travelled to New Delhi, where doctors broke the news that she had Stage 4 cancer, which had spread from her lungs to her abdomen and lymph nodes. Janet Kannini Ikua’s friends and colleagues from Nation Media Group, and other media groups, Artists and Family are planning a family concert on 8th of November 2015 at the Carnivore Grounds in Nairobi.
This concert will be from noon to 6.00 p.m, and is aimed at raising funds towards Janet’s treatment. We appeal to all Kenyans to join hands with the rest of the country to attend and support this noble course.

Illume x Transform Africa Summit - Day 1
Transform Africa Day 1 in Kigali- Rwanda, the summit was themed "Accelerating Digital Innovation"
Illume x Transform Africa Summit -Day 2
The transform Africa Summit was held in Kigali Rwanda whose aim was to connect, innovate and transform Africa through technology, here is a teaser on what transpired during the summit.
Kagame echoes usage of ICT in Africa in the Transform Africa Summit held in Rwanda
A the three day Summit that run from 19-21 October 2015 themed “Accelerating Digital Innovation”, that attracted over 2,500 delegates from across the globe including: Heads of state and government, members of the UN broadband Commission, CEOs of leading technology companies, policy makers, members of the private sector, and young innovators from across the continent has concluded with ICT being top of the agenda.
The Transform Africa Summit is the leading African forum bringing together regional and global leaders from government, business and international organizations to collaborate on new ways of accelerating and sustaining Africa’s ongoing digital revolution.
The President of Rwanda Paul Kagame who was the key speaker, address focused on the steps that African governments must take to drive greater digital adoption and innovation. He emphasized the need for governments across the region and continent to collaborate on solutions for unlocking Africa’s full potential.
"In Africa, we are fully aware that our continent has often missed opportunities to accelerate development," said President Kagame. "[By] placing ICT at the core of our transformation agenda we can make sure that Africa is never again left behind."
Kagame emphasized on the importance of ICT in government as it enables it to provide more efficient and accountable public services which leads to better health outcomes, quicker customs procedures, and computerised land titles.
He also stated on the need to change the mindset that would be necessary to further unlock the region's potential.
"ICT is increasingly making access to world class education and information affordable to everyone" said President Kagame. “Africa can no longer be excluded from globalization; we must develop our human capital and productivity using the same methods that are taken for granted in many other places. That doesn’t mean anything will be easy, the existence of technology doesn’t automatically change lives. A mindset of curiosity, responsibility and hard work is necessary if we are to become our best selves and to compete effectively in the wider world.”
The final day of the three-day Summit ended with a session entitled “Face the Gorillas” where young entrepreneurs from across Africa pitched start-ups to a panel of seasoned entrepreneurs, Angel investors and other financiers– nicknamed “Gorillas”, as a motivator for young African entrepreneurs. The financiers bought shares and pledged funding to some of the initiatives judged viable, and promised to continue support smart ideas from young entrepreneurs in the ICT sector.

Barclays to charge clients higher fees from next month to boost earnings
Barclays Bank plans to raise the fees charged to customers next month joining a growing list of lenders that have raised transaction tariffs to shore up profitability.
The bank is seeking regulatory approvals to change its tariffs, to join Commercial Bank of Africa, NIC, and Standard Chartered which have raised their fees this year.
“We wish to notify you that subject to regulatory approval we will review our bank tariff effective November 4, 2015,” said the bank in a statement on its website.
Banks are under pressure to increase their transaction-based income as high interest rates dampens appetite for credit by private sector and consumers. NIC was the first bank to review its rates in June before CBA and StanChart did so in August.
“They are looking to protect their non-funded (non-interest) income because net interest margins will be squeezed hence the need to recoup,” said Vimal Parmar, head of research at Burbidge Capital.
Local banks rely on interest income to drive revenues. As at end of June, interest income constituted 60 per cent of the industry’s total income of Sh226 billion.
Market appetite for loans has eased following a rise in lending rates with annual growth in private sector credit shrinking to 20.5 per cent in June from 25.5 per cent the same time last year.
Introduction of a loan pricing model pegged on the Central Bank-set Kenya Banks Reference Rate has given banks little room to increase lending rates forcing them to turn to non-funded income to support their profits.
Some of the tariffs Barclays Bank is expected to increase include credit card rates.
The bank said it would be charging 3.9 per cent per month up from 3.7 per cent on amounts used on the card for purchase of goods if not settled within the grace period.
NIC increased over-the-counter withdrawal fees in a move meant to push its clients to use ATM machines, among other channels of accessing cash.
The bank charges Sh300 for withdrawal of less than Sh40,000 in the banking hall compared to Sh100 charged for withdrawing more than Sh40,000, which is the maximum amount accessible through ATMs.
CBA introduced a fee of Sh350 for withdrawing less than Sh40,000 at the counter while anything above this is free. Standard Chartered introduced monthly tariffs to some of its personal accounts which were previously exempt. The bank’s monthly tariffs are between Sh499 and Sh1,000.
Banks were expected to lower transaction fees following policy changes by Central Bank of Kenya and introduction of technological innovations.

Uchumi Ngong Hyper sold to Thika Road Mall at 2 billion
Retail chain Uchumi is selling the building that hosts its flagship Ngong Hyper outlet in Nairobi as part of a debt settlement plan meant to put the troubled supermarket back on track.
The shop, which is located on Nairobi’s Ngong Road, is being sold to owners of the Thika Road Mall at a price of Sh2 billion, making it one of the biggest real estate deals this year.
Uchumi Ngong Hyper, which sits on 2.5 acres, is one of the retail chain’s prime real estate assets. The retailer has contracted the Nairobi law firm Coulson Harney to oversee the transaction.
Uchumi chief executive officer Julius Kipng’etich said the Thika Road Mall owners have also expressed interest in acquiring Uchumi’s 20-acre piece of land located in Nairobi’s Kasarani area at a price of Sh3 billion.
Mr Kipng’etich said Uchumi needs the money to pay suppliers given the limited options it has to raise funds. “We have weighed the option and come to the conclusion that we cannot go back to shareholders for more money again having just come from a rights issue,” said Mr Kipng’etich, adding that the Ngong Hyper deal is being crafted as a sell-and-lease-back arrangement.
This means Uchumi will remain tenants occupying in the sizeable area of the Ngong Road mall.
“We have noticed that we have been disadvantaged by having operations in areas where some of our outlets have never made profits thereby negatively affecting our revenue,” said Mr Kipng’etich.
He named Tanzania and Uganda as locations where Uchumi outlets are running at a loss and face imminent closure.
Uchumi last week announced that it was closing three outlets in Uganda and that it is in the process of identifying non-profitable shops in Tanzania for possible closure.
Uchumi has written to the Capital Markets Authority (CMA seeking approval for the planned sale of assets and is awaiting the regulator’s response.
John Wambugu, the Uchumi company secretary, said the intended sale ‘had progressed well’ but declined to go into the details, citing buyer-seller confidentiality.
Thika Road Mall director Bharat Doshi on Monday said his team had met the Uchumi management to express interest in the two properties but insisted details of the deal were not immediately available.
“We have held talks with the management of Uchumi Supermarkets expressing interest in properties they have put up for sale but we have to wait for at least two weeks to disclose any details,” said Mr Doshi.

We should all be feminists | Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie | TEDxEuston
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie born 15 September 1977 is a Nigerian novelist, nonfiction writer and short story writer. She has been called "the most prominent" of a "procession of critically acclaimed young anglophone authors [that] is succeeding in attracting a new generation of readers to African literature
"We should all be feminists" was a TEDx talk that was given by Adichie in 2012. She shared her experiences of being an African feminist, and her views on gender construction and sexuality. Adichie believes that the problem with gender is that it shapes who we are.[20]
"I am angry. Gender as it functions today is a grave injustice. We should all be angry. Anger has a long history of bringing about positive change, but in addition to being angry, I’m also hopeful because I believe deeply in the ability of human beings to make and remake themselves for the better."
Parts of Adichie's talk were sampled in Beyoncé's song "Flawless" in December 2013

Telkom Kenya cuts data tariffs by upto 33pc
Telkom Kenya has cut its mobile Internet tariffs by between 27 and 33 per cent, in a review that also saw it scrap some data bundle plans and introduce new ones.
Subscribers of the 1GB Internet bundle plan will now pay Sh500 from the previous Sh750, while 5GB will cost Sh2,000 from the previous Sh2,750. The firm has scrapped the 500MB it used to charge Sh500 and introduced a 400MB data bundle at Sh250.
The telco has also introduced a new bundle of 2GB at Sh1,000. The new Internet tariffs apply for its pre-paid mobile Internet subscribers and those who access the Internet through modems. Orange has also extended the validity period from 30 days to 90 days.
Telkom Kenya said the new data offers were informed by extensive market research to determine current customer data needs.
“The new offers give subscribers the choice of buying the daily, weekly and monthly bundles due to their simplicity and affordability,” the firm said Tuesday in a media statement.
“Longer validity periods and affordable offers stood out from the feedback we received hence we tailored the offers to suit this trend,” it added.
Daily unlimited will now be 200MBs up from 100MBs, weekly unlimited will move up to 1GB from 500MB and monthly unlimited will move up to 3GB from 2GB.
The price cut comes on the backdrop of Telkom Kenya’s market share loss in the fixed Internet services.
Statistic from the Communications Authority of Kenya for the year ended June 2015, shows Telkom Kenya lost 9.8 per cent. Its market share on fixed Internet dropped to 1.8 per cent from 11.6 per cent for the year ended June 2014, while its subscribers now stand at 2,152 as at June down from 11,714, meaning it lost 9,562 clients in the past one year.
Mobile Internet subscriptions during the period stood at 19.8 million having grown by 42.2 per cent in the same period of the previous year.
Safaricom has 12.5 million subscribers representing 63 per cent market share, Airtel has 3.6 million users and a market share of 19 per cent.
